I Love New York - Part 2

Have you heard of American Girl Dolls? Read about them here: http://www.americangirlplace.com/agp_home.php

My granddaughter has two of them, one is named Jess and I forgot the other. In the store, they have, in addition to more clothes and accessories than Saks Fifth Avenue, a hair salon for the dolls. A hair salon for dolls!! She wanted to have her dolls' hair done, and we thought it would be cost prohibitive, but it fit within her budget. The photos show the doll hair stylists working on various dolls, while their owners stand and watch how it is done. It really is a treat to watch them. The doll heads are about 1/4 the size of a human head, so everything has to be precise, but on a smaller scale.

One simple pony tail costs $10, and includes 2 hair bows and a hair clip. I didn't make a note of the other prices, but 2 pony tails were $20, I think, and French braids and more elaborate hairstyles went up on a sliding scale. I am constantly amazed at the amounts of money people are willing to toss toward this kind of thing.

They have clothing for children to match those of their dolls. There are accessories of every possible thing you can imagine. It is an industry, and a big moneymaker. Wish I had thought of it first!

I'm betting that the trip and the show will be a memory she will tell her children about. Don't you love that half price ticket kiosk. I like not knowing what you might get to see until you get there.

Sounds like the doll salons learnt from the pet stores, they just queue up to take your money don't they?

I really enjoyed this post....I've bought Samantha, Kirsty and Josephina for my granddaughter, Kaela. I had no idea they had this shop in NYC. I can see me flying to Boston to get Kaela and make the 32 min. flight to Manhattan. What fun that would be! What a novel idea to have this shop for the dolls.

Please don't spread the news re doll's hair stylists. I think so far they don't exist here. I have to admit to spending hours playing with the grandchildren's Barbies.

Can you imagine all the kids that want to have their dolls hair "done"? Very imaginative idea!

I visited the American Girl shop in Chicago, but I didn't see a hair salon there. My daughter never did have any of those dolls; in fact, I was not familiar with them until a few years ago.

We saw that store in Manhattan while we were there. Nyssa has two of them as well. When they first came out she got Molly and then one that more matched her own hair style and coloring.

Another really cool doll is called My Twinn. You select eye color, hair color, and a wide variety of things, send a picture in and they make a doll that looks like the person. Nyssa has two, one when she had long curls and another when she had a bob with smoothed sides. I made them matching outfits and she carried her on the plane on one trip. A lot of double takes in the airport. I've even heard of people sending in old baby pictures of their mother to have one made as a gift. And now they have an online site.

Even if I had been warped enough to think of this idea I would have been to embarrassed to tell anyone about it. I mean who in the world would go to a doll salon? Just listen to this….”Hey Judy, I think I am going to open a doll salon!” Now really, wouldn’t you still be laughing?

Meanwhile, some years earlier….

That’s a what? Hula hoop? You are an idiot. Who in the world is going to stand there and twirl that silly-ass thing around? You have lost your mind.

It scares me, Judy, to think of all that money going to rearrange the hair on a doll's head. My, my. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm a boy.

BTW, my blog address has changed. Blogger Beta screwed up my account and I can't access my old blog but all the posts are okay. I just have to publish to a new address so I am using the name Utenzi2 now instead of Utenzi. Thanks, Judy!
