The Original Four Freshmen

Way back in my early days of blogging, I wrote about meeting the members of The Four Freshmen singing group. At the time, I couldn't for the life of me find the publicity photo that they gave me. So here it is; they signed their first names and I later filled in their last names (although I mispelled one of them.)

If you are too young to remember this group, known for their close harmony and jazzy renditions, read about them here, and listen to a sample:

They were pretty nice to the young, impressionable girl that I was in 1962. I just did a search for the previous post about them, and to my surprise, it was a year ago - June 27, 2005. Go check it out, if you are interested.

Just finished jumping back and reading this. Love the trip down memory lane!
Then I had to start reading your wedding story. Loved that too. We're from much the same era. I'll come back and read more when I have lots of time :-)

i was a kind of young in '62 and my daddy didn't let me have control of the radio in the car, but I still remember the 4 Freshmen. My parents were concerned that I was going to become the Eternal Freshman.

I gave them a listen. They sound good. The picture is wonderful. What great memories. How odd you would think of them on the exact same date as now. It is the month for graduations in many places. Hugs and have a wonderful day!

You got so much memorabilia, does your house have 20-25 rooms or something? Geez...

I too have wondered where Mr. Kenju sits amongst all of this cool stuff...

The Four Freshmen? Who are they? That must have been before my time. ;)

Hmmm, I think I have them on vinyl. Perhaps I will send you four cases of photos to scan...that will teach you to be so dexterous with your memorabilia.
I love the flowers below. And I NEED froggy cake.

I gave them a listen, too. I'd heard of them but don't know that I ever heard them. I love harmony like that. It was a good article on them, too. I never would have guessed that they were so influential.

Beautiful virtual flowers below by an impressionable girl, all grown up, above! What a wonderful memory!

Fair warning regarding the arm wrestling: I have power yoga biceps and triceps. ;~)

These guys look like sophomores, at least. Were they from New Jersey? Or am I just assuming that all worthwhile American culture that didn't come from New Orleans came from New Jersey?

In 1962 I was 9 years old. My brother was born that year, nine days after my birthday. I didn't start listening to the radio on a regular basis until several years later so I don't know them. The do have a nice sound though.

Surely am glad I checked out some of your older posts, 'cause I found this one. This was/is one of my favorite vocal groups. Had the pleasure of meeting them when they guested on a TV show I was working on at the time. Ken Albers was also, a friend of our Producer.

My husband, before we met, had a vocal group patterned after his favorites, The Hi Lo's.

There have been some really good groups since Freshman days, including New York Voices. Am not sure if that's the group the long respected, now deceased, L.A. Times music critic, Leonard Feather's dtr sang with, or maybe she sang with a different group called Feather.

A really good sounding group that formed a little later, still around last I knew, is Beachfront Property.
