My Printer is Driving Me Crazy (Or....is it Word?)

My printer, the HP Photosmart 5515 is great, but now it is driving me nutso. At least I think that fault lies in the printer, but it may not.

I am typing and trying to print pages in Microsoft Word Starter. That is the form of Word that came on my laptop five or so years ago. Apparently Word Starter only lasts 3 years or so, and then you have to buy new software. Well, cr** on that!  If you pay $500 for a laptop, Word or Word Starter ought to last for the life of the laptop, in my opinion. What say you?

Trying to get this thing to print is worse than trying to pull teeth with no pliers. But I discovered something this morning:   if I compose a page in Word Starter, it will not print. BUT, if I change it to a PDF file, it prints as well as ever.  HOW?  WHY? What can I do, if anything, to get back to being able to print Word files without having to buy the software again???

That's a head-scratcher, for sure. Doubtless it has something to do with money.

Several people use program similar to Word, can't remember what is called Open source product. It works exactly...well almost like Word.. I use Word. I have never learn how to do PDF, I am so fat behind learning things.

That's FAR behind in learning. Having fat fingers using iPad in a different subject.

My printer is the HP photosmart C4480and I have no problems with it. I don't have anything called Microsoft Word Starter on my computer. I use Microsoft Works Word Processor (which brings up a blank sheet) and type whatever I need and print from there. I'm not really following what your problem is ...not computer savvy enough !

I had that problem, but luckily I was able to upgrade from Mr.G's computer, so now I had Microsoft Office. Mind you, I still can't print the files that were originally done on Word Starter. I have found a way round it, but can't actually explain it!

Thankfully I haven't experienced this problem....yet. I did have a problem with my new computer and my old printer. The old printer was for Window's XP and would not convert to my new computer so I had to buy a new printer.

I use this free software on my laptop at work, and never looked back.

Think you and tiff have hit on it. Built in obsolescence.
