I told you 24 hours ago that I was turning off the word verification on the site to see what would happen. I can happily report that I received only one spam, and it was sent to email, but never appeared in the comments, for some reason. Unless that changes, I am leaving the verification off for good.

OOps, maybe I spoke too soon. I just got another spam comment (at midnight) in email. but it didn't register here. I'll leave it off until morning, and see if I have any more.
Very brave to turn it off ...
Good to hear you had a positive experience leaving the word verification off. It is soooo nice not trying to guess what letters they are showing! so now: do I just publish? let's try it!
Wonderful!
Hi Judy, I still class that as bravery, can't abide the spam so I'm afraid mine will have to stay on.
Big Daves Blog reports that he has been getting email spam from his blob site that seems to be predominantly Australia based, (Au.)
It is so nice of you to do this, I hope it works out. My little radar weather screen says you are getting rain and it is on its way over here. Is it any cooler? Still 67 degrees here, feeling tropical.
I may turn mine off too and see. Daisy says thanks for reading her entries, lol! I've got to get her a gig on David Letterman! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday :)
Congratulations, Judy. I've never put verification on mine and personally find it too annoying to utilize. I do get spams, maybe 3 or 4 a day, but that's not very bothersome.
Good luck with avoiding the spam. It annoys me so much that we have to deal with spam at all.
Ben: so far all I have gotten spam comments about is golf clubs. I can't figure out why, since I don't play golf and have not mentioned it in my blog.
At this point, there have been 8 spams since I turned the WV off. Unless it multiplies, I will be leaving it off.
Word Ver. doesn't bother me much at all anymore. Most people I know use it and it's sort of like second nature now.
I see you still have it off so you must be doing okay.
The reason you can't see it on your blog is that it is on some old entry - often a VERY old one. But it is still there.
The problem with the Blogger system of notifying you of comments via email (which you can turn off, if it bothers you to see it in your inbox) is that they don't tell you which post the comment is attached to. Spammers are using this lack to spam OLD blog entries, and it can be very difficult to find.
This also means, of course, that nobody sees the spam unless they are reading back over your blog. As far as I'm concerned, though, anybody who goes to that much trouble deserves not to be presented with spam - so I'm keeping word verification on.
