Angels Among Us.....Part 2

Since I posted recently about angels, I decided to continue the theme with this fan. It is titled "Heavenly Guardian" and was painted by Mabel Rollins Harris. Harris is best known for her pastel nudes, painted much in the style of Maxfield Parrish.

See examples at.........

She was active from the 20's through the early 50's, and I think this fan is probably from the 50's. The reverse advertises Jim Millner Plumbing Co. in Providence, NC and also Danville, VA. The presence of the letter prefix on the telephone number leads me to believe it would be the 50's.

  2. I love this fan, too!!! What is very interesting to me are all the wonderful artists that did these! Judy, do you happen to know the history of where and how 'The Artists'? I will go read about this lady, as you suggest!

  4. Hi, thanks for visiting my blog. Re Life of Pi, that book blew me away. It was totally unlike any other book I had read, and it stayed with me for a long long time. It was so visual and powerful, and that final chapter really made me wonder ...

  5. These are the fans I remember. Who knows? We may have used them at the church campground here in Virginia. My dad pastored in Roanoke then and we made the drive each year to central Virginia for camp. I remember that it seemed like a long drive...it would be sans interstates that did not exist at the time. We always stopped at this old country store where they had the penny candy. I remember a stick candy that had an almost cherry flavor. It wasn't like the hard cherry sticks of today but had the softer more sugary consistency like those softer peppermints they still make. I've never found it anywhere else and find myself still looking each time I'm in a Cracker Barrel or other country type store. It's amazing but thinking about them still makes my mouth water.

Boy I got off the fan subject there. The fans and camp and the dirt and sawdust and woods and freedom to play; those are some of the BEST memories. Faced with the same things today I would more likely remember the heat, mosquitos, dampness and hard matresses in the cabin rooms.

  6. Pictures like that make us feel a sense of security. I like to think there's an angel over my shoulder.

  7. Hi Judy...
About the pipes..I collected these small miniature smoking pipes when I was a child...(haven't done that for..well, you know how old I am...I was about 5 or 6 years old...) I do remember one that was shaped like a wooden shoe...it was quite beautiful...the rest (maybe 3 or 4) were just small and usual looking....It did say what kind of things did you collect as a young person, I think...No???
Anyway...the only one I MAY still have is that wooden show-looking one...God knows where it is though!(lol)
