I let Molly (my grand dog) out on the deck this afternoon and decided to go out myself for a bit of fresh air. Molly made a bee-line for the grassy area to the right, and I, sensing movement to my left, turned and saw four deer in the side yard.  Three were lying down and one was standing guard.

Whipping out my phone, I took a photo. I tried to crop it so the deer would be more visible, but it isn't working.

I watched the deer for about 2 minutes, during which time they all got on their feet, but didn't run away. The funny thing to me was that Molly never saw or heard them. By the time she came back to the door, the deer had disappeared.

Tonight, I went to put her out for a bathroom break. As I opened the inside door, I saw a flash of white. Sammy the vagabond cat saw Molly through the storm door and ran to the back side of the deck. I kept the storm door closed for a few seconds and then I saw a flash of black go by. The feral cat who is Sammy's almost constant companion also ran to the back of the deck. I gave them time to get away before I opened the storm door so Molly could get out. She chased them all over the deck, but they jumped off and she lost interest. She didn't even bark, which is unusual. I guess Sammy will keep his distance for a week or two.  :-(  I'll miss him.

Note: the two-toned deck railings happened when the tree fell on  the deck and house in 2011 and we had to have part of the rails replaced.

It must be so lovely to be able to watch deer in your own garden from the house! I'm surprised Molly didn't frighten them off, but maybe they are used to dogs, and know there is no real danger.

Hopefully Sammy will come back for a while. what does he live on, being feral and nervous of people?

I clicked on the photo to enlarge and saw the deer. That's awesome that they came that close - they are fleeting things of beauty.

We get deer in our garden, they are beautiful.

Oh I hope Sammy comes back sooner!

And come on you should be out there in the freezing cold, wood staining that fence! :D

Poor Molly is pretty much a dud as a hunting dog which is great news for the deer and cats.

There have been times that I think the deer and my dog have developed a friendship... Nice of you to keep your "granddog"

When you talk about Molly and Sammy, I always picture Garfield and his dog. Garfield would be glad for the dog to leave just like Sammy will.

Didn't that tree also knock out your chimney? Surely you have only had one tree hit your house.

I couldn't think of Garfield's dog's name. It's Odie. Mental block.

You've had all the ups and downs of living amongst the trees but so lovely to see the deer so close to home.

I live in the city so the only time I get to see deer is when I visit a nature park. They are in the wild, though, but in more remote areas. You have a really nice blog...continue to enjoy the deer.
