How Scary Is It?

While sitting at my usual perch this morning (at my desk in the bonus room), I saw movement out the window. It was a Sheriff's Deputy, carrying a rifle, He was stalking something - but I knew what it was.
(not mr. kenju....lol)

About three weeks ago, a neighbor sent out an email saying that there was a deer in the neighborhood with an arrow sticking out of its left side, and that we should call the sheriff if we saw it, so that he could put it out of its misery.

I am always on the look-out for deer, but this one managed to elude me until this morning. I saw the deputy approaching the front door, so I ran downstairs. He said not to be alarmed if I heard a gun shot, that he was going to put the deer down. Another neighbor had spotted the deer in his yard, and the deputy had been called pronto.

I went immediately to the kitchen, and saw the deer at my side fence; warily looking around. The arrow was in plain sight, and I honestly don't know how that magnificent creature managed to live so long with that arrow in him. At the same time, I heard the deputy enter the gate on the other side of our deck. I ran to get the camera, but by the time I got back to the window, the deer was no where in sight, nor was the deputy.

It makes me sad to know that the deer is in pain, but it also lifts my heart a bit, to know that he is strong and able to carry on, no matter what.

I kind of hope though, that the Sheriff finds the deer as it is a shame it is suffering. Over here in the UK, it is just as likely they would try and capture the deer to see if it could be treated.

Oh my, that is hard, isn't it. They are such magnificent animals, I just wish they weren't so prolific. I guess in Virginia there is on limit on the number you can take down.
One morning on her way to work, on one of the busiest roads in charlottesville, Sarah say a deer writhing in the median, having been hit by a car. That sort of stuff just tears her up.
I hope the poor deer is out of his misery.

It stinks to think that putting one down is the only way, but it's not as though they're endangered. If it is put down, I do hope someone uses the venison!

I suppose treatment with a vet would be out of the question?

I feel for the deer, too, but I hope its pain is over soon.

Ow, my heart hurts. I'm sorry that they feel they have to put the deer down. Your right, he is strong. We have deer here in our town also. I love it when we spot one grazing when we go grocery shopping. We have very strict laws here about animals. It is against the law to shoot a deer here in town with any weapon, you cannot trap/kill or relocate any foxes, coyotes, bears or skunks. Wildlife people are who we have to call and they only come out for the bears, of which they sedate and relocate. I have never heard of a deer being hurt, so I don't know what they would do. Makes you wonder.

That the Deer managed to survive this long says something about his tenacity and his longing for life. Like Pat, I'm hoping a Vet can help instead of a Gun.

Poor deer...how did it get that arrow in the first place? it could get a second one from a vet so that the wound could be treated. It's easy to talk from the city.

How very sad. I hate that unskilled hunters are allowed to maim with hurried, misplaced shots. A hunting license should require more than a few dollars.
I do like Imaginography's solution much better.

You've left us in suspense...did you hear a gunshot or did the deer elude the Deputy? I'll bet there's a lot more to the story.

No shot, Ginnie. The deer heard the deputy coming and he ran away. The deputy left in his car.

An Arrow??!!

I thought the US was the gun-totin' champion of the world. Didn't know you shot with arrows!

But so sad for the deer, the wound will no doubt fester and give him a lot of pain. We are just as bad in the UK - deer get hit by cars, and poaching is rife, and the poachers are not too bothered about how they kill the animals.

It sounds as if the arrow didn't hit anything vital. It makes me wish it could be captured and sent to a wildlife zoo or something.

I hope that deer is not suffering anymore...such beautiful creatures. I see them frequently by our forest preserves, but not around the area where I live. Take care Judy....hope you are feeling much better by now. ~Joy
