Maya Angelou's Best Poem Ever

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....Enough money within her control to move out And rent a place of her own even if she never wants to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....Something perfect to wear if the employer or date of her dreams wants to See Her in an hour...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...A youth she's content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....A past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her Old Age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....One friend who always makes her laugh...And one Who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....A good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her Family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....Eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, And a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel Honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....A feeling of control over her destiny...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...How to fall in love without losing herself..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...HOW TO QUIT A JOB, BREAK UP WITH A LOVER, AND CONFRONT A FRIEND WITHOUT RUINING THE FRIENDSHIP...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...When to try harder...And WHEN TO WALK AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... That she can't change the length of her calves, The width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...That her childhood may not have been perfect...But it's over...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...What she would and wouldn't do for love or more...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...How to live alone...Even if she doesn't like it...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...Whom she can trust, Whom she can't, And why she shouldn't take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...Where to go...Be it to her best friend's kitchen table...Or a charming inn in the woods...When her soul needs soothing...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...What she can and can't accomplish in a day...A month...And a year...

And now it's your turn: what would you add to this?

A woman should have something to do that fulfills her soul and makes her feel needed.

Would "Every woman should be obedient" belong to this list, Judy? Maybe this isn't really a good post for guys to comment on. Sorry!

Every woman should pamper herself every once in a while without feeling guilty (within reason of course!).

Dave, you will live to regret that answer!

Every woman should know at least 2 gay men. There is a camaraderie there that defies competitiveness and sexual-objectification.

That they are going to make mistakes, maybe lots of them, and it's STILL going to be okay.

I woul alter it to read;
A Man Should Have...
and maybe this line would need a little work too.

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

Every woman should have a computer.

Every woman should know that if you can't find love in your heart you will never find it in a box.

...KNOW how to install a toilet with only a book and not a man for assistance.

... HAVE a husband who would be the perfect model for her daughter's future husband(man, that's a mangled sentence).

Oh, and to answer your question, I called the nice manager at Panera right away and thanked him nicely for the offer and explained that I had another offer that I couldn't refuse! He understood and bade me good luck.

I really can't think of much to add.
Perhaps the capacity for forgiveness but with a strong memory to never forget.

Every woman should own her own remote control that is set to override the husband's remote when he turns on those fishing shows yet again! ;)

Actually this is NOT by Maya Angelou, the author is Pamela Remond Satran and the article is '30 THINGS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE & SHOULD KNOW BY THE TIME SHE'S 30'. Here is a link to her site: http://www.pamelaredmondsatran.com/articles.php

This poem was not written by Maya Angelou. I am a huge fan of her work and after seeing the poem on your website, I searched for a copy. I then discovered it was originally written by a journalist, Pamela Redmond Satran for Glamour in 1997. Thought you may want to know the real author!

Hey, this is NOT a Maya Angelou poem you know. I was so impressed by this poem that I visited Maya's site and was taken aback by the disclaimer (also found on www.snopes.com/language/literary/awoman.asp).

A woman should know when to love her self beyond her past or her looks and her success!
