It sure looks beautiful, Judy, but 140 years is a long time to work on a building. Can you imagine what it was like living near it during the construction?
A kid sees it and asks his dad about it: "Well, that's the building that your great-great-great granddad was building. When he was a kid."
It's amazing how much ornamentation is on the exterior. Reminds me a little of all those buildings at Duke U that mimic that Gothic style of architecture.
And the doors on the chapel across from the cathedral are magnificent. Amazing engineering went into that dome, technically it should have been impossible with the tools of that age.
Did you know the pretty green and rust and pink and white marbles were added way later? :) The Italians didn't like it at first. They said the cathedral was wearing its pajamas. lol Some say it's a wedding cake too. Personally, I loved it. A zillion details to see and study until your eyes just give up. ~S :)
They paid such attention to the detailing on the outside of the buildings. I only wish I had had a good digital camera then. The stained glass there is stunning as are the frescos.
Hi Judy ~ Your photos have all been wonderful, and it is great to see these places and beautiful buildings, through your eyes. You have done a wonderful job, thanks for sharing with us. Take care, Cheers, Merle.
