May I Recommend?

The next time you have a problem with your camera, remember that the people at Wolf Camera are geniuses! I went by there again today and they fixed it!!! Last night I had attempted to re-format the card, and in doing it, the camera got hung with the lens zoomed out and it wouldn't go back in. And it wouldn't turn off unless I removed the batteries. I thought it was a goner for sure. But the nice young woman at Wolf's took out the card and reformatted it in another camera - and now it all works fine again. Hallelujah!

Her advice is this:

If you take a lot of photos, download them to the computer and delete them from the card, there is still a residue and build up on the card. She suggested that everyone ought to reformat their cards about once every 30 days (after downloading, of course). The how-to for that is usually in the instruction booklet that came with the camera. She did say that most people don't know that - and so I'm telling you as my good deed for the day!

Now, go forth, my children, and reformat all over the land. Selah.

Michele sent me over, Judy.

I don't reformat that often but I do every so often. It's a good idea. One of the things you really have to avoid is changing the contents of the card via the computer. Deleting pictures is generally best done via the camera's controls else one can screw up the card's FAT (file allocation table)

Hi from Michele`s!

Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog! It is good to know that about the memory cards. I have no idea how to re-format my card though....

Thank you for that information. I will indeed go forth and reformat.:-)

I have had to reformat several times. Mine came up with an error message about a "damaged memory card." But it just needed reformatting.

I didn't know about reformatting. I will find my little book and read up on it!
Thanks!

Yes, reformatting is a great idea. And reformating means doing it WITH the camera, not deleting the pics from your computer or else you may end up with corrupted file remnants on your card.

wow, I had no idea a card could be reformatted. I wouldn't have connected the lens movement to the card. Guess that's why there are experts.

Thanks from me, too. I'd never thought of it (& probably would NOT have). I found a few articles on camera & memory card care and they all recommended this! Great catch.

Taking about camera's!! Well I drop mine by accident a couple days ago :(, took today to have it repaired at Best Buy as I had purchased the extended warranty and guess what? the guy says oh probably won't be covered due to abuse!! I didn't read the very fine print that says that. I trusted the sales person who said it would cover anything short of be lost or run over by a truck. Live an learn. If and when I get my camera back I'll be reformatting for sure. Thanks

Hey Judy. You know, your timing in sharing this couldn't be more coincidental. Last week at work, I wrote a research note about flash memory retention issues. It must be fate!

Sounds like a wonderful photo store: I always try to buy from them instead of the giant, soulless chains. The advice is priceless, and the relationships you build over the years can't help but make us better photographers.
