Caricatures R Us

Back in 1988, I was on a committee to do flowers and decor for a fund-raiser ball for a group here in NC dedicated to lobbying the legislature for the rights of children.

Part of the entertainment for the evening was having your caricature done by the man who draws cartoons for our local newspaper, Dwane Powell. He had agreed to do them for a $5 donation to the group, and nearly everyone at the ball lined up to get theirs done. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

When I got to the the head of the line, he asked me what my profession was, and I told him "florist". He looked at me, looked off in thought for a few seconds, and then began to draw. I couldn't see what he was drawing until he finished, and he revealed this. I thought it was a pretty cute idea; although my neck is long - it certainly isn't that slim!

Too cute. We have our grandsons done by street artists when we go to SF.

That is charming Judy! I have always admired artists that can do charicatures....I mean Hershfeld was The Master! And it surely is a special gift to be able to do this! This is treasure!

How sweet. And amusing. I've never had a charicature done before, I could only imagine how it would look!!! (Probably a bit too lifelike for my liking!)

I'm here via Michele's today...

Big fan of caricatures myself. It is always interesting to see what facial features will be emphasized in the drawings. Gives insight into how others see us.

Too cute. I wish my neck were that long and thin. ;)

Cute as a button! I've often thought about having mine done by those artists at the fair, but never have-- yet.

That's a decent characature. I hate when they accentuate the one part of your face that you most hate, like the nose or your neck or something, and then you can't bear to show it to anyone. I'm so vain, evidentally!

That is one serious brush with greatness.

I am in awe of the editorial catroonist's gift of subtly telling a story in a single frame, using various styles to create a unique vision of what matters that day.

The Montreal Gazette's longtime editorial cartoonist is Terry Mosher, who draws under the pen name Aislin. I grew up reading him, and continue to follow his genius via the Internet. The world needs more like these two.
