Collections: Ephemera ~ Paper Fans

The "Guardian Angel" fan is a popular theme. As the children gather wildflowers, the angel holds them in her protection. The reverse advertises H. Earl Mann, Pulpwood Dealer, in Jetersville, Virginia. The phone number was 2-F-14....which is very odd to me. I never remember seeing one with letters in the middle like that.

Titled "Childhood Faith", the little girl clasps her hands in prayer, while her doggie waits patiently. No artist is mentioned, unfortunately. The reverse advertises Pedigo Appliance Co. in Waverly (no state listed). We used to have a dog just like that one!

Titled "Lovable", and I am sure the small pup was just that. This one advertises Taylor's Warehouse in Winston-Salem, NC, where "the last three seasons, Taylor's has sold more tobacco for farmers than any warehouse on the Winston-Salem market".

Conkey's Poultry Book is the next one; Conkey Says: Get Busy!" The illustration, painted by "Price" is of two children and a basketful of chicks. It is spring, for the flowering tree in the background is in full bloom, and the boy is barefoot. The rear announces Plant No. 4, in Nebraska City, Neb. where they make poultry feeds and remedies, such as yeast with cod liver oil. ICK! My husband's mother force-fed him cod liver oil when he was a child to the extent that he cannot stand fish in any form!

The fan with the angel is just like the ones they had at the church campground in central Virginia when I was a little girl. I remember thinking she was so beautiful. The only difference was the attached stick. It was more like the "childhood faith" fan, curved to fit the fingers. I can almost see the old campground in my mind's eye. They say it has radically changed but I bet there are still places a little girl can go to play and get dirty.

Pedigo Appliances was located in Waverly, Ohio. It is long gone as is most of Waverly. This fan collection is fascinating. Paper goods are considered the "portfolio" of the future since so few will be made due to the computer influx.
Waverly, Ohio is south of Columbus. It was once a very bustling small city. Many vacation homes dotted its lakes. Only about 4,000 residents remain. Its main industries are hospitals and retirement centers.

I never knew of paper fans other than reading very little of them. Thank you for lovely photos and oodles of personal and historical info about them! ( I'm sorry about your husband and fish. I know of others who were force fed cod liver oil, too, sadly.)

They are breathtaking Judy! They would be beautiful inside a framed shadowbox or something. I'm lovin' 'em! Your matchbook collection is pretty awesome too :D

I love the one with the guardian angel. Images like that have always brought me a sense of comfort. I know bad things happen to everyone, even kids, but just thinking that an angel is there in the midst of it makes me feel better.

I never had to take cod liver oil, but my Mama did give us some vile stuff that was something like that. It was so AWFUL! Did you ever hear of something called Hadicol? Not sure of the spelling.

Do you actually own all these old fans?

What a gorgeous collection of fans. I remember my mother has a couple of old fans like that, which is good that she has kept. Yours looks wonderful and something to hold on to, to pass down your family...
