General Hospital - or - Has ABC Gone Mad?

Caveat: if you are not a regular viewer of General Hospital, this may bore you to tears.
Earlier this summer, ABC had a dancing contest wherein some celebrities, paired with ballroom dance competitors, participated in a reality dance contest over a series of weeks. Nearly everyone who watched this show thought that John O'Hurley would win, but Kelly Monaco (an actress on General Hospital) was the surprise winner.

Now they have announced that there will be a "dance off" between Kelly and John in September, which will be judged by viewer phone calls instead of judges. Concurrently, General Hospital has introduced a story line that strains credulity even more than their usual plots. Kelly, in dual roles, is playing (on the one hand) a woman who is being coerced into marrying a man who does not know that she is a "stand-in" for his former fiancee. This guy is a good dancer, and so Kelly has to know how to dance for their wedding. It is a gratuitous attempt to cash in on her presumed popularity on the dance show, in my opinion. I heard last night on TV that Kelly will also appear in an episode of "Desperate Housewives". Wanna' bet they have her dancing on that show too?

Soap opera and reality have never had a whole lot in common, so I figure it must be OK if ABC does whatever it wishes with its so-called properties.

No one ever said it had to make sense: just that it garners the network the attention it so richly craves.

It's enough to make me want to cancel cable.

Oops, where's my head? I forgot to say I dropped in from Michele's. But I come on my own, too...

Crossover singing is what Kenny Rogers did. Crossover dribble is what Allen Iverson does. But crossover dancing? Gack.

I hope she has had a few more lessons. I hope this doesn't sound too mean, but, while she
"undulates" quite well, she is as graceful as an elephant in combat boots.

I'm sure she must dance better than I do, since I don't. I don't even know what is on TV anymore, never watch it much. I do like the reruns on PBS of "As Time Goes By" with Judi Denche and "What Not To Wear" but I didn't even get excited over QVC's all day gold jewelry sale this year. Help! Someone get a thermometer, the heat must have gotten to me! :)

I just found your blog via Marion and am so pleased I did. Really enjoying catching up on your postings.
I'm a "Guiding Light" fan, so can't comment on the dancing. But I AM A Desperate Housewives fan, so will be interested to see if this Kelly ends up on there.
Will be returning often to read your blog.

Hello Michele sent me.

hmmmm. Usually I try to write a relevant if not pithy sentence or two in these comments. To just say Michele sent me seems somehow cheap. Still, I don't own a T.V, and since I find watching mostly insulting and boring, I avoid doing so even at other people's houses. So really, I have no common experience to share re this post. You could be speaking a foreign language for all I know.

Hi,
Another person from Michele, but wanted to thank you for visiting also. I was interested to see in one of your posts that you like to read a person because he writes about Raleigh. I like to read Nicholas Sparks of "the notebook" fame as he writes about New Bern North Carolina. I lived in Havelock/Cherry point for many years so worked and ran around New Bern a lot. I am now trapped in the midwest, what my kids call cornfield hell, so it is great to be able to read about places I had fond memories of. I will be stopping in again to check on you. I spent a lot of time at Duke as my son had many, many surgeries there. Glad to have found you.
