Odds and Ends ~ 4

"This is the first lesson ye should learn:

There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, it doesn't behoove any of us to speak evil of the rest of us. This is a universal law........."

Edgar Cayce Reading 3063-1

Do you know anyone who epitomizes this saying?

It is not bigotry to be certain we are right; but it is bigotry to be unable to imagine how we might possibly have gone wrong. -G.K. Chesterton, essayist and novelist (1874-1936)

Here's another good word for you. Use it; impress your friends......LOL

Nostomania (nos-tuh-MAY-nee-uh, -mayn-yuh) noun: An overwhelming desire to return home or to go back to familiar places.

From Greek nostos (a return home) + mania (excessive enthusiasm or madness).

Nostomania is an extreme form of nostalgia.

This spoke to me this week, since I just went back "home" for a school reunion.
This word, and another one everyday, comes from the website Wordsmith, and you can subscribe here:

A word is not the same with one writer as with another. One tears it from his guts. The other pulls it out of his overcoat pocket. -Charles Peguy, poet and essayist (1873-1914)

  1. I bookmarked that site and will have to check it out further. It is always good to keep the mind sharp and expand the vocabulary.

  2. And some sit down at the typewriter (computer) and bleed. (I forget who said this, but it was so true.)

  3. I've never been a writer. I only write when I have something to say---inane and self-absorbed as it may be. Thank GD I didn't have to make my living writing--I'd starve.

A great site, Kenju. Even a non-writer can learn.

  4. oh, a word for my condition!

Linked to my depression is mild agoraphobia, which results in a deep need to come home. I have left supermarket trolleys with shopping in, I have walked out of friends' houses, I have left work - all because of this need to return to the safety of my home.

On the flipside, I rarely, if ever, have a desire to return to my roots. My younger years were very unhappy, and I don't want to dredge it all up....

    Interesting word...Nostomania

  8. Michele sent me over to see you, Judy.

I don't really have the nostalgia thing for where I grew up, Judy. I went back to visit regularly as long as my parents lived there but I've not been back in the 7 years since they moved South. The last class reunion I went to was the 10th which was 17 years ago.

Did I ever show you this picture of a frog I took? It's on my girlfriend's blog. She doesn't post very often so most of her posts I've actually done for her. I also got some pictures of a nasty looking toad that same weekend at her house but they're not up on the Net. Yet!

  9. Nostomania--wow. Fits me to a T. By the way, though claiming to be agnostic, my dad loved all things esoteric including Edgar Cayce. I was teethed on his teachings and later studied his work for a few years in an ongoing group. It was there I first learned to meditate.
