This one was very popular in 1956, when it was copyrighted by Pincus and Sons Music Corp. Patti Page was a guest on all the variety TV shows of the day and she recorded a few of the best known songs of the late 50's.

She is still a pretty woman. Some of her big hits were "The Tennessee Waltz", "Cross Over the Bridge" and "How Much is that Doggie in the Window?"

I think Patti's most popular record was "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?" Not sure about that...maybe it something on her official site.
I find myself increasingly open to music that was big before I was born. I guess I'm getting up there in years!
ReplyDeleteThis tune would resonate with me: the first real vacation my parents took us on was to Cape Cod. I remember it like it was yesterday, right down to walking in the surf on Seagull Beach.

I don't remember this song but the "doggy in the window", I think I heard it on the radio (am) when I was just a little sprite. Here from Michele, this time.
ReplyDeleteRemember all those tunes in the pop music genre as well as the novelty tune "...Doggie in the Window." Always thought of Tennessee Waltz as being more country music in that time, which was sort of a crossover tune. The one about Cape Cod would be my favorite of hers in that group.

I love that song, Judy. I've got it on all my computers in MP3. It was released 5 years before I was born. Imagine that!
ReplyDeleteI know her because my dad was so into the music of his time...mostly the 40s and before rock and roll and the British invasion really took over. She's still alive? I liked Doris Day back then too and sometimes got them confused.

Hey, Jude! Been missing coming around so I'm playing catch up. I remember How Much Was That Doggy- one of the first songs I learned the words to- I was still a preschooler. Great sheet music posts. I would like to come to the Museum of Judy Collections sometime, please. You always have such great stuff.

ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh out loud! Patti Page sing The tennessee Waltz brought back a classic memory---about the time I made Jack memorize the song and then get up on "Buckskin Harry's Saturday (TV) Show" and sing it. He was mortified!
I remind him that in 1952 the TV screens were so itty-bitty nobody could see him anyway---especially through all the screen snow and hori/verti distortions. Not to mention the passage of 57 years tends to dull audience memory.
Doesn't matter. He hasn't forgiven me yet.

I can remember my mother singing "How much is that doggie in the window" when I was a baby. I was born in 1965, so I guess it was a very popular song!

My mom, who loves me but can't sing, used to sing "How much is that Doggy?" to me every day when I was a child. I still love the song and I've never heard the Patti Page version. I assume she probably sounds waaaayyy better than my mom - but no where near as loving. It all came back to me when I had Sweet Girl and mom started singing it to her... and so did I.
