Don't Feed These to Your Dogs!
I got this email from a friend recently about his poor dog, who had ingested something that made her sick. I decided to post it so that you would not make the same mistakes:
"I went to a web site about things NOT to feed to dogs. What I read amazed me. I already knew about chocolate being bad but not the other things listed. I want to share them with you and if you feel it is appropriate share them with the readers of your blog.
1. Chocolate of any kind--deadly!
2. Avacodoes
3. Tomatoes
4. Grapes and raisins--very deadly!
5. Any vitamin preparation or food heavy with iron--Geritol and molasses.
6. Salmon
7. Raw eggs
8. Macadamia nuts
9. Any fruit with tiny seeds like strawberries
10. Potatoes or any potato product
11. Many soy based foods
12. Onions--very deadly!
13. Garlic can be bad for small breeds
14. Any product with caffeine
15. Tylenol--deadly!
16. Non-buffered aspirin
In other words, be careful what you give your dog. What may seem fine for
humans can be fatal or harmful to dogs. "
I hope you find this list useful. I know many people who give their dogs table scraps and who do not know that some things are harmful for their animals. Ignorance is no excuse.
I don't know about the tomotoes and onions, Judy. My girlfriend's dogs chow down on those regularly. And believe me, you don't want to smell their breath! Don't get me started on garlic...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteI have a cat and I read that most cats are lactose intolerant, so they should not be given milk.
Btw, Michele sent me!
I have to add rawhide bones for Max, he swells up like a tick. I think his problem with figs comes from the little seeds, but boy he loves them. Steals them right off the ground.
ReplyDeletei also don't recommend arsenic or antifreeze either.
ReplyDelete~just kidding, michelle sends me to good places.
I never feed Duke anything other than Dog food/treats, but he has tossed around the occasional grape tomato that fell to the floor. Thanks for the warning.

thanks for the very useful information! ainsley only gets carrots and the odd veggie, but like marisa's duke, she's swiped the occaisional grape tomato. I'll be more diligent that it doesn't happen again! i'm also passing this along to all my dog parent friends out there!

This is really helpful Judy...I don't have a dog, but, if I did, I would deeply appreciate knowing about these VERY VERY BAD foods!
ReplyDeleteI'm here from Michele tonight and my Lordy the traffic is heavy! Between the time I wrote where I was going and it got posted..about four people posted in between..Oh Well...what can you do?
Glad I got to come visit you tonight, my dear...
Potatoes?! Wow, I never would have thought of that. Thanks for passing this on. I'm usually pretty good with not giving scraps to the dog, but some of that stuff seems really benign. Huh!
ReplyDeleteMichele sent me and I'm glad!
My dog recently ate a huge very dark chocolate Buddha (about the size of a tennis ball and solid) that someone gave me for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteHe's 90#, so it wasn't likely to kill him, but still would have taxed his liver. So, I had to go through the lovely process of giving him hydrogen peroxide causing him to throw it up.
Blech!!!! Thankfully he was fine, though. And the bright side? *I* didn't eat the chocolate Buddha!
here by way of michele today...
I'd like to add this to your list: feeding dogs with chicken. Their bones are brittle and when they break they can puncture the dog's stomach.
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Michele!
I knew about some of those, but not all of them. THanks!
ReplyDeleteMichele sent me today!
Here from Michele's... good advice on what not to feed dogs... we had a dachshund that would beg for cheese... but that's not so godd for dogs either.
ReplyDeleteI was told it's only cooked chicken - as long as the breed is big enough they can eat raw poultry.
ReplyDeleteI thought most dogs loved raw eggs - although obviously too many is a bad idea.
chocolate is fatal to humans too if eaten in quantity:)
Great tips for dog owners. Mine used to eat the tomatoes off the vine, such a thief. I came across this cartoon and hoped you would find it funny. http://www.usaweekend.com/wit/060129wit_wisdom.html
ReplyDeleteMacadamia nuts? Tomatoes? Onions? Strawberries? What's a dog supposed to live on, peanut butter?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cartoon, Hope. As you see, I liked it enough to post it here!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Judy, I find this list very useful! Flora loves to eat tomatoes, but without seeds. But potatoes? I never would have thought of that, also.
ReplyDeleteThe list of "no's" may look daunting, but the list of "do's" is even longer. Your dog will be better off if you do feed it human grade food. The crap they put in commercial dog food is responsible for much of the ill health in dogs today, including the poster's probelm with skin allergies.
ReplyDeleteI have a book coming out Oct 2006, Gotham/Penguin called "The Dog Ate It, Cooking for Yourself and your four legged friends." Wait! It will help you feed your dog a healthier diet and even be healthy yourself.

Thank you for the info on tomatoes. My little Boston Terrior loves Apples!!

Has anyone heard whether or not a dog can eat apples with the peal? My dog is sick and I was wondering if she is having a hard time digesting the peal. Also, she ate some deviled eggs a few days later. I see that they can't eat raw eggs, but do boiled eggs have a bad effect, too?

The last dog I had ate apples with the peeling, but I don't know about cooked eggs. I don't see why they would be bad.
ReplyDeleteI had a dog die from diabetes. The only thing we had fed her was carrots. So just a heads up.
